Einstok Icelandic Wee Heavy

Icelandic Wee Heavy Scottish Ale

Surrender your taste buds

Einstök Icelandic Wee Heavy is the first Scottish Ale of its kind to use local Icelandic farmed, birch-smoked barley in collaboration with Eimverk distillery in Garðabær, Iceland. We then add native Icelandic Angelica, a fabled herb used by Vikings past, to give subtle herbal notes that complement the sweet and smokey malts.
Our Wee Heavy is rich and hearty, with a touch of smokiness, while remaining incredibly balanced. Over a thousand years ago Vikings invaded Scotland, and now we return with this phenomenal Icelandic Wee Heavy. Your taste buds have no choice but to be conquered.

What is Angelica?

Angelica (or Ætihvönn in Icelandic) is considered a gift from the heavens or ‘herb of the angels’ for the Vikings of old and for brewers of today. The Angelica plant has numerous culinary and medicinal properties that have made it a famous herb throughout the ages. Angelica has been used to heal, help in digestion, ward off evil, and even provide fortitude.

When Vikings began their trade expeditions to Europe they brought along dried Angelica as currency, and one of the oldest known laws from Iceland’s Viking Age offers severe punishment for anyone stealing neighbor’s Angelica. Angelica grows heartily and strong all over the unique landscape of Iceland. The Icelandic Angelica root that we brew into our Icelandic Wee Heavy has an earthy and clove/anise-like flavor that balances perfectly with the caramel and smoked malt flavors in this brew. Tasting Notes

Deep in color and with a creamy head, your senses are greeted with sweet malt aromas and slight alcohol esters that warn Icelandic Wee Heavy is not for the faint of heart. What Others are Saying About Einstök Icelandic Wee Heavy

A reviewer from BeerAdvocate.com stated, “With the smoked Icelandic barley and angelica, this Wee Heavy has taken more risks than your standard, off-the-shelf Scotch Ale. And it pays off in spades, deliciously. I will crave this.” Others were pleasantly pleased by the twist on a classic Scottish-style and are looking forward to reaching for another. The big debate seems to be whether to drink it ice cold for a crisp clean taste or let it warm to cellar temp for a fuller, richer experience.

Difford’s Guide gave the Wee Heavy four and a half stars stating it is “rich but balanced.” Of course, the best way to know if this Scottish Ale holds up is to try one for yourself.
